HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – One of West Virginia’s own was named to the 2016 USA Women’s Elite Softball Team.
Marshall junior outfield Morgan Zerkle, of Milton, was named to Team USA after competing in a selection camp in Irvine, Calif. this week.
“It was crazy being surrounded by so much talent out there,” Zerkle the newest Elite Team member said in a news release from Marshall University. “Everyone is good, and not just good but the best. It was cool seeing how I fit into the mix there.”
The Cabell Midland High School alum was one of 40 players selected from around the nation to try out for Team USA. The Amateur Softball Association of America and USA Softball announced their selections Friday.
Eighteen players were named to the National Team, and 18 players were named to the Elite Team roster.
“This is just the beginning of Zerkle’s future at the next level,” Marshall head coach Shonda Stanton said in the release. “She has already accomplished a great deal being considered one of the top 40 players in the country. She will continue to grow as an athlete with this experience elevating her game even more. We are extremely proud of her and excited about her opportunity to wear the red, white and blue.”
