Eight The Great

Each year across West Virginia there are an almost certain set of tragedies that become part of our communities as young lives are lost even before their prime.  Through various situations, young people and entire schools are forced to deal with the grief of losing a classmate and teammate. From Roane County to Beckley to Capital and Tyler County in recent months.

How the schools and their communities deal with it is important.  How the family perceives that support is even more important. Enter the life and tragedy of Colt  Adams and Wayne, WV.

At 6’5” and 205 lbs, Wayne Pioneer’s Colt Adams #8 was a daunting image for opposing players to go against in the fall of 2018.  The sophomore phoneme had come into his own (tight end and linebacker) and was helping lead the resurgent Pioneers back to the class AA playoffs where they were used to being.

Wayne is like many West Virginia small communities where everyone knows everyone and Friday nights are as much a social event as a sporting one.   The community comes together around the success and struggles of the football team.  “There’s nothing like the love and heartbeat of a small town and football binds it together.” – Rhonda Adams.

When the Pioneers and the family of Colt Adams finished their playoff run in November of 2018, no one could have imagined what lie ahead.  Life is like that.  God spares us from what we don’t want to imagine. Basketball season came and Colt Adams played his big man role for the Pioneers.  He maintained a 4.0 GPA   He celebrated Christmas and a New Year with his family and the community.  “You’d see him loading up his X-box and even the TV in the car and heading to a friend’s house to play,” his mother, Rhonda Adams said. His father, George Adams told RSN, “He loved to razz his friends and have a good time. He also had a big heart and that was exemplified by the many friends he had.”

In many ways Colt Adams represented the poster athlete of any West Virginia high school football team.  Tall, strong, talented, personable and giving.  That’s what fans love to see in their hometown heroes. For the Adams family and the Wayne Pioneer community that persona came to a tragic halt in May 2019.   “It was a normal day.   The day after Memorial Day and finishing up the school year.

  I was off work that day and Colt got up and agreed to drop his 9 year old sister off on the way to school.  He told me how much he was excited about the upcoming football season and they were going back to states.  He then told me he loved me and kissed me goodbye,” his mother told RSN Sports.

Ten minutes later Rhonda Adams got the call no parent ever wants.  The children had been involved in a tragic accident.  “That day was a whirlwind.  I arrived at the scene and they wouldn’t let me near the vehicle.  The next thing I’m at Cabell Huntington Hospital and surrounded by what seemed the entire community… coaches, players, fans, everybody was there.  That’s how I kept going.”   Rhonda Adams said.  That is Wayne, WV.  That is any given community in West Virginia.

Colt’s father George added, “When I say Colt was from Wayne, he was where he was supposed to be.  When I witnessed the thousands that turned out for his funeral it was clear.” What makes that statement even more profound is that the Adams are from Grayson, KY.  They have no extended family in Wayne, WV.

The heat of summer came and the pain of never having a normal day set in for his parents and siblings sisters Peyton, Maelynn and Shelby .  “That’s the thing I want people to realize is that I crave normal.  No special holidays.  Just a normal day with Colt in it,” his mother told us.  

Colt’s younger sister, Peyton, suffered severe injuries in the crash and continued to undergo surgeries to heal.  Like many families suffering the same fate before them, healing is an elusive thing. As with many high school communities that have suffered similar tragedies, the 2019  and 2020 football seasons came at Wayne and it was clear that the community would never be normal again.  Fundraisers and ceremonies were conducted and the team has done much to hold onto a leader that was cut short of his prime.  

 Teammates and peers still get together for his birthday and important dates.   At least two scholarships have been set up in Colt Adams’ name. “Eight the Great.  You see it everywhere now when you’re around town,” George Adams pointed out.   His mother added, “My biggest fear is that he becomes forgotten.”  Her fear isn’t alone.  Across West Virginia and many small towns in our nation, there are parents that hold onto the same cherished memories and the comfort that their child made a difference.  That they do.  Their spirit lives on in the lives of those they touched.   

For 16 year old Colt Adams, he brought together an entire community.  Then it manifested good in opposing teams.  Now the towering 8 The Great from small Wayne is known across West Virginia and the Mid Atlantic. Colt’s mother stated, “He loved life.  Every second of it.”  This week was Colt Adams’ turn to graduate high school but Eight the Great will be looking down from heaven with a smile as he watches his classmates carry his legacy outward from Wayne, WV and into the world at large.

The money raised from the festival and donations to the memorial fund is used to help so many families in need.  Colt had such a kind and giving heart and always wanted to help others.  So to honor him, we provide 4 scholarships every year to high school students.  We have been blessed to be able to donate money to help families with children who have cancer and childhood illnesses.  We have made donations to the Cystic Fibrosis and Autism Foundations to honor some family and friends.  We have also provided food, clothing, and Christmas gifts to families in need of some extra help and support.

A Mother’s Message

The mother of late Wayne High’s Colt Adams conveys a heartfelt message to the family and community of Alex Miller of Roane County.

From the unedited words of Rhonda Adams….

When I heard the heartbreaking news of Alex Miller collapsing during the game Friday night, my mind immediately drifted back to the moment on May 28th when everything in my life changed. Back to the morning my precious son, Colt Adams, was killed in a car accident on his way to school. I just kept thinking NO!!!!! I don’t want another family and community to feel this pain!!!

I don’t know Alex’s family or even one single person in the Roane community, but I feel like I know them and my heart immediately broke for everyone who loved him. Things like this aren’t supposed to happen to good kids like Alex and Colt, who have wonderful, bright futures ahead of them. It’s just not fair!!!

I wish I had some magical words of wisdom for Alex’s family and the entire Roane community that would help wipe away their tears and stop the deepest hurt they’ve ever felt. Although, I can’t stop the unimaginable pain they are experiencing I can do two things……I can love them and pray for them every day.

You see, here in West Virginia when one community hurts we all hurt. After Colt’s accident, I was simply blown away by the enormous outpouring of love shown to my family and the Wayne community from so many small towns across our amazing state and many other areas. Now it’s time for Wayne County to return the favor. Please know so many people here are praying for you guys! Our community is joining in and wearing maroon today for your sweet Alex. My 9 year old daughter picked out her shirt last night and said “Mom I have to wear maroon for Alex tomorrow because everyone loved him just like they loved Colt.”

I read these words not long after I lost Colt and it really made me think…. Only those who have loved greatly will grieve greatly. And the love that has brought them grief will also bring consolation.

After I read this, a thought crossed my mind. What if 16 years ago God would’ve given me two choices.
Choice #1- Never have Colt in my life and therefore never experience the nightmare of losing him.
Choice #2- Only get to love and be loved by Colt for 16 short years and then lose him.

My answer was almost immediate. I will always choose #2. Even though my heart is completely broken and my grief unmeasurable. I had the privilege of loving and being loved by the most amazing young man for 16 years and I wouldn’t trade that for anything in this world.
Love is always greater than grief.

So I’d like to leave Alex’s family, friends, and football brothers with one last thought. Although nothing makes sense right now and I know how angry, hurt and confused you are please remember Alex’s beautiful smile and all the wonderful things you loved about him. Don’t let this destroy the love inside you. Try your best to live each day to the fullest because like Colt, Alex doesn’t have that privilege anymore. Those are the things I tell myself everyday when I don’t think I can make it through this nightmare. But I’ve decided I will honor my son every day by showing kindness and love. Colt loved with all his heart and my love for him makes me want to do the same. I love you Roane County and together we can all make it through this.

A State Struggles With Loss

In the past days the West Virginia sports community and beyond have once again been wretched with the sudden and tragic loss of a young life. The loss of Roane County gridiron senior player Alex Miller as he collapsed during the first quarter of a game at Clay County has once again caused West Virginia to take a sobering time out to mourn the loss of one of our young people.
While our staff at RSN Sports was quick to bring the news and our condolences on Friday night, I was prudent as president of the company to allow a few hours to absorb the magnitude of such loss before making a public statement.
In our business, we are embedded among West Virginia’s young athletes and fans on a daily basis. In many ways we find that those same players and fans are intertwined with each other.
U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito once stated, “West Virginia doesn’t have a huge metro city like Charlotte or D.C. Rather we are a state made up of small towns.” We at RSN get to see on a weekly basis that those small towns are what make our state great. Everyone in a small town or county knows everyone else. Social media has brought those connections even closer across our state.
When tragedy such as this weekend strikes as it has on a regular basis, it affects us all. We are in the finishing stages at RSN of releasing a fall magazine with a feature on late Wayne High star Colt Adams who died in a tragic auto accident on the way to school in May. His mother stated, “My biggest fear is that Colt will be forgotten.” Our article on Colt is slanted as much about how the Wayne community came together in support of the family and team.
Sadly we realized that tragedy would strike again in another community and hopefully Colt’s story would help ease some sorrow. Shortly after that interview, Cameron High graduated QB Colby Brown was taken. Now we are hurting for Roane County and Alex Miller’s family.
Purpose. That’s what we find parents of a lost one seek in their loss. When tragedy strikes we are rightfully quick to offer prayers and financial support. However, in the longer run those parents want to know that their child’s life made a difference. If the loss of a Alex Miller or a Colt Adams makes us take pause and come together as stronger communities then maybe, just maybe in some small way those parents can take some comfort that there was good that came from such devastating sacrifice.
It is our job as the West Virginia community to not forget as Rhonda Adams feared. Not only remember the lost but equally maintain the mindset of togetherness that it brought.
Another note we would like to make is our concern for not only Roane County but also the Clay County players and fans who were present when tragedy struck. They will need our prayers as well. I had a conversation with a Clay High XC coach on Saturday after the incident. A former U.S. Marine, he could barely speak without taking a break to gather his emotions.
Many beautiful words have been posted. I was personally in Joan Edwards Stadium Saturday night when Marshall University took a moment of silence in recognition of Alex Miller.
On behalf of all of West Virginia, I will close by offering up an edited rendition of Abraham Lincoln’s Letter to Ms. Bixby.


Dear Parent,–
We have been made known that you are the parent of a young loved one who has tragically passed in an untimely manner.
We feel how weak and fruitless must be any word of ours which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But we cannot refrain from tendering you the consolation that may be found in the gratitude of a West Virginia community that has been blessed with their presence in our world.
We pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours to have shared their presence with so many and laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of God.

How High School Track Gives College Bound Football Players a Boost

With 324 players currently on Division-I rosters, the state of Michigan is well-represented on the college football circuit.

But before those athletes went on to start their college football careers, most made their marks on high school tracks across the Great Lakes State.

From Todd “T.J.” Duckett claiming three consecutive shot put state championships to Tyrone Wheatley holding state records in the long jump and 110-meter hurdles, the Michigan High School Athletic Association’s list of track and field state champions is full of gridiron stars.

To learn more about the symbiotic relationship between track and football, MLive caught up with some of the state’s top coaches and athletes who are currently starring in both sports.

Some of the factors that play into dual-sport success — particularly speed — were self-explanatory, but others were less obvious.

Strength and explosion

Every year in the weeks leading up to the Super Bowl, data emerges regarding how many players from the AFC and NFC championship rosters competed in multiple sports while in high school.

Prior to the 2019 contest between the Los Angeles Rams and the New England Patriots, TrackingFootball.com found that 90 percent of athletes from each team were multiple-sport athletes, and that 68 percent of the Rams’ roster competed in track while in high school.

East Kentwood track and field coach Dave Emeott has led the Falcons to seven state championships since 2009, and some of his best athletes have been Division-I football recruits, including Wisconsin signees Logan Brown and Stephan Bracey, University of Michigan freshman early enrollee Mazi Smith and class of 2020 Michigan State commit Dallas Fincher.

When he sees an aspiring college football player show interest in track, the sales pitch is all about diversifying the athlete’s training to add strength, speed and explosion.

“The grand majority of what we’re doing is building speed and power, and a lot of what they’d be doing without us wouldn’t be working the same areas,” Emeott said. “When a kid comes out and wants to become more explosive, it’s an awesome complement to what they’re already doing in the weight room.

“We’re all about power and explosiveness, not just focusing on the speed. In track, you’re not running fast to get around someone or outrun them, you’re only working on your speed.

“For the throwers, they’re focusing on power from the bottom of their toes to their fingertips, and that’s a huge benefit when they get back on the football field.”

In the college football world, 300-pound linemen are the norm, and what separates the difference makers from the rest of the crowd is their ability to move at that size.

“Even with the bigger guys, speed is king when you’re playing football,” said Zeeland East track coach Ralph Neal, an 18-year coaching veteran that led the Chix to a Division 2 state title in 2017. “I look for the fastest big guys over the strongest big guys because it’s about how well you can move. If they’re coordinated and can move their body weight really well, that’s going to translate.”

‘Nowhere to hide’

On the football field, 11 players need to execute their assignments for a play to be successful, but on the track, it’s harder to hide behind your teammate’s mistakes.

In essence, there are no excuses, and there’s no one else to blame.

“One thing that happens in track and helps football players is the opportunity to compete on an individual level — when there is nobody else around that didn’t block or throw it in the right place,” Emeott said. “Whether you do your job or don’t do your job, everyone knows it, and there’s nowhere to hide.”

From the perspective of Zeeland East’s Neal, that pressure is something that football players thrive on because they’ve already gained a sense of mental toughness from weight room sessions and two-a-days that make football such a demanding sport.

“From the competitive standpoint, football kids like to compete, to put themselves in tough environments and fight through it,” he said. “There’s more pressure in a field event, where it’s just them and the event, but I feel like kids from football come over with that grit and toughness and are ready to compete.”

Still, standing alone on the starting block or in the thrower’s circle is a far cry from standing at the line of scrimmage with a full complement of teammates.

“A kid who was a receiver at Western Michigan told me that he’s never been so nervous than waiting for the baton,” said Traverse City Central track coach John Lober. “They’re out there without any pads or helmets on and everyone is watching them. To the competitive athlete, it brings a new skill set, a new type of coaching and new type of environment that increases the athlete’s awareness and competitive edge, which carries over into the different arenas.”

Getting out what you put in

East Kentwood’s Emeott considers 90 percent of track and field to be training, and because of that, there are few sports that provide as much of a reward for an athlete’s hard work.

Boone Bonnema, a senior at Zeeland East and future Western Michigan linebacker, has felt at home on the football field since second grade, but he has also grown to appreciate throwing the shot put and discus based on his ability to see the fruits of his labor.

“I’ve always thought track was kind of interesting compared to all the different sports that I’ve played, as far as how I perform is based on how hard I practice and how focused I stay and what I put into my body that will help me come out with the right results,” said Bonnema, who captured a regional title in the shot put on May 18, with a personal-best throw of 54 feet, 7 inches. “As a football player, it’s helped keep myself accountable because the sport of throwing all kind of relies on how you treat it. If you’re going to take it super seriously, then you’re probably going to do better.”

While it’s not surprising that training to run fast will make you faster, that training doesn’t translate perfectly to the gridiron, where the attribute “football speed” has been given to some of the NFL’s top players who never blew away the competition in a straight-line setting.

Traverse City Central’s Lober, a veteran coach of 55 years, recognizes that and can see why some football players would be hesitant to run track, but added that the best athletes thrive in that environment.

“The thing is that it’s all measureable, and they love that,” he said. “They love pushing themselves to go farther, and the great athletes thrive on that.

“Some of those athletes might shy away (from track) because some of that makes them uncomfortable, and there’s a certain risk factor you have when you’re measuring stuff, but the great ones have goals and compete to reach those.”

The track vs. football camp dilemma

Spring is the season for outdoor track and field in Michigan, but it’s also a busy time for high school football players looking to generate some recruiting buzz and earn scholarship offers along the way.

A growing number of football camps, ranging from skill position to lineman events, are occupying weekends during the track season and forcing players to pick one or the other.

Before he committed to Western Michigan and later Wisconsin, East Kentwood 3-star wide receiver prospect Stephan Bracey gave football priority over his track career, despite leading off the state championship 800-meter relay team in 2017 and helping the Falcons win Division 1 titles in 2017 and 2018.

“There were times where if there was a big camp with a lot of scouts, I’d miss a track meet, so it was a little difficult to decide, but when I decided I was going to play football at the next level, I gave that priority,” Bracey said.

A 30-year veteran head coach of the Detroit Cass Tech football and track programs, Thomas Wilcher has seen a decrease in the number of gridiron stars coming out for the track season.

“I think the reason why track has become less attended by football players and other athletes is because you have more competition set up for other sports,” he said. “7-on-7 camps and AAU (basketball) pull athletes away, and you also have lacrosse and baseball, and they pull you away.”

As a former University of Michigan running back and All-American hurdler for the Wolverines, Wilcher also has a unique perspective on how track can help boost and athlete’s profile even without attending spring football camps.

“I try to say that football camps are great, but not all football camps are great,” he said. “You have to pick and choose because sometimes they’re nothing more than money-maker schemes, and you have to beware of what’s out there.

“Sometimes I think track will help you more because you’re still working, and you’re creating a buzz. One thing you can’t teach in football is speed, so you better figure out how to go get it.”

Track with a side of football

Michigan’s high school track and field state championship meets begin on Saturday, June 1, giving athletes like Bracey and Bonnema less than a week left in their running and throwing careers.

Bracey enters the Division 1 meet seeded first in the 400-meter relay (42.36 seconds), first in the 800 relay (1:27.64), third in the 100 dash (10.80) and third in the long jump (22 feet, 0.25 inches), while Bonnema is third in the shot put (54′ 7) and 11th in the discus (144′ 7).

Both should contend for state titles, and that means the focus has been on registering personal bests, but it has been near-impossible to put football on the back burner.

“I’m doing a lot of drills working on route running and my feet; working on opening up my hips,” Bracey said. “It’s mainly just drills and working on my hands and catching balls out of drills.”

“I’m doing my best (to stay in football shape),” Bonnema added. “Coach Neal wants me at a high caliber and have all my energy reserved for throwing, I’m going to finish out the track season, and then I’ll have three or four more weeks until I head over to Western, and that should be enough time to get back to running and have me conditioned for that.”
