Marshall Men’s Basketball to Host Green Bay in CIT Final
Marshall in search of second postseason crown in program history
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall Thundering Herd men’s basketball team looks to capture the 2019 CollegeInsider.com Tournament when it plays host to the Green Bay Phoenix in the championship game on Thursday night at the Cam Henderson Center.

Marshall attempted 32 shots from 3-point range Tuesday night, pushing the team’s season total to 1,032 – a program record. The previous record, 1,012, was set last season.
Elmore upped his career 3-pointers total to 355, which is No. 47 in NCAA men’s basketball history. He started the game ranked No. 55, and then passed players like Oklahoma’s Buddy Hield and Georgia Tech great Dennis Scott on the all-time list.
Elmore moved into second place on the program’s single-season 3-pointers list. Elmore passed Keith Veney (111; 1995-96) and Austin Loop (112; 2016-17) with his seven made 3s, which pushes his career total to 113. The all-time record is likely safe, as Veney made 130 during the 1996-97 season.
The Herd is looking for its second-postseason title on Thursday.

The West Virginia Mountaineers (17-11) and the Pitt Panthers (8-19) battled it out for bragging rights in the 196th edition of the Backyard Brawl Wednesday night at Monongalia County Ballpark. The Mountaineers fought their way to a 5-4 win, making it five straight over the Panthers.
Pitt jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning after West Virginia starting pitcher Nick Snyder beaned back-to-back Panthers, then Andres Antonini drooped an RBI single into shallow leftfield.
In the bottom of the inning, Kevin Brophy ignited a record 3,387 Mountaineer fans, going opposite field for a two-run homerun into the Pitt bullpen and giving WVU a 2-1 lead.
Later in the inning with two outs and Tevin Tucker standing at second, Austin Davis singled into left field scoring Tucker and Tyler Doanes brings in Davis smacking a deep line drive into left-centerfield for a Double.
Nick Snyder night ended after five innings, only giving up the one run and had five strikeouts to sustain a 4-1 Mountaineer lead.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Mountaineer Ticket Office has announced that the WVU men’s basketball Big 12 Conference home game against Texas on Saturday, Feb. 9 is a sellout.
The matchup with the Longhorns is True Blue – all fans are encouraged to wear blue to the game.
West Virginia’s Feb. 2 matchup with Oklahoma at the WVU Coliseum was announced as a sellout in December.
Fans still looking to purchase tickets for those matchups are reminded to visit StubHub.com, the official fan-to-fan marketplace of WVU Athletics, for potential availability.
Tickets for the Kansas State, TCU and Iowa State games are on sale at WVUGAME.com and 1-800-WVUGAME. Fans are encouraged to use the ‘Pick Your Own Seat’ map online at WVUGAME.com to purchase available seats at the WVU Coliseum.

WVU dropped to 0-5 in Big XII Conference play (8-9 overall) after being drubbed by host TCU 98-67 on Tuesday night. West Virginia fell behind 13-6 in the early minutes and it only escalated from there. The Mountaineers were down 22 at half and trailed by nearly 30 points most of the second half.
The loss was another dubious page in the 2019 season as WVU mixed turnovers, missed foul shots and blown layups to leave head coach Bob Huggins scratching his head for answers. The legendary coach has tried nearly everything during this losing stretch to ignite the team. Over 13 players saw action on Tuesday and Coach Huggins recently pulled the red shirt from freshmen Doomes in an effort to find a spark. The misery only seems to continue for the team and its fans.
The team has certainly faced new challenges this season as it lost much experience at guard play with the graduation last year of Jevon Carter and Dexter Miles. Compound that with the loss of dominant shot blocker Sagaba Konate to injury and you have the potential for what we are witnessing this January.
At current, the only excitement is watching to see how Coach Huggins manages

Tate Martell Leaves WVU in the Cold

Highly sought and former Ohio State QB Tate Martell posted late Tuesday that he has chosen the Miami Hurricanes to further his college career. The news comes on the heels of Martell’s visit to a snowy Morgantown on Sunday when he was considering WVU on a short list of choices.

Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell entered the NCAA transfer portal last week, giving him the opportunity to explore other opportunities outside of Columbus. After a few days, a few favorites have emerged as potential landing spots for the Buckeye.
According to 247Sports, Martell is eyeing Louisville, Miami and West Virginia as potential destinations. The quarterback is expected to visit all three at some point this week.
Martell was apparently already at West Virginia on Sunday, according to a post on his Instagram story. He posted an image of a sign with Morgantown road sign in the picture.

We agree and caution any lawmakers that would be tempted to follow the path of Florida and other states getting involved in prep transfer rules.

Rick Darlington leaving Apopka is troubling sign for Florida high school football

Rick Darlington, one of the greatest high school football coaches in Central Florida history, won’t just be driving his family and his pick-up truck from Apopka to Enterprise, Ala.; he’ll be traveling back in time to a simpler place where his new school is better suited for a man from the old school.
There are many reasons Darlington announced earlier this week he is leaving A-P-K — where he has won three state championships and compiled a 167-47 record during 17 seasons with the Blue Darters — but I believe the main one is because Florida has become rootless and rudderless in the realm of high school athletics.
The open-enrollment rules passed by the state legislature two years ago have opened the door for a flash flood of high school athletes transferring from one school or to another without regard to commitment or community or to what school district they actually live in.
“I feel the legislature, when they made that rule, ruined high school athletics,” Darlington said on our Open Mike radio show. “At Apopka, we’ve always built things on pride and loyalty and integrity and being a good man and sitting in the front of your class and wearing a tie on Tuesdays and saying, ‘Yes sir.’ These are things we believe are part of building men.
“Those things have sort of become punchlines when you have other schools where kids can go and act a whole different way. If kids don’t like the way I think they should act, they can just go somewhere else. It tears at what I believe is the fabric of high school sports; where you play for your team and your town and the people you grew up with; where you try to do great things and make your hometown proud of you.
“That’s what we had at Apopka,’” he added. “The kids grew up together, they won state championships together and the faculty and the town loved ’em. It’s getting harder and harder to keep kids home if they don’t like the way things are being done or if another school looks shinier and provides them with the flavor of the month.”
